No Links Between Iraq & Al Qaida?

Curioser and curioser...

In what may be the most shocking news to emerge from the already stunning Oil-for-Food scandal, investigators say that Saddam Hussein bankrolled key al-Qaida players in the late 1990s - a period of time when the terror group was planning the 9/11 attacks and the Iraqi dictator was ripping off billions from the U.N. program.
"Saddam had given $300,000 in cash to Ayman Al Zawahri, Osama bin Laden's number two man, in the spring of 1998," the Weekly Standard's Stephen Hayes told WABC Radio's Monica Crowley on Saturday.
In an eerie coincidence, an October 2001 estimate by the Justice Department put the entire cost of the 9/11 operation at $300,000.

But just keep repeating to yourself folks: there is no link between Iraq and al Qaida.

Not one shred of evidence. Via Right Wing News

C'mon Cassandra. The very thought is preposterous. Al Kae Duh is Islamic. Saddam was largely secular. How could they work together -- they didn't like each other. And don't give me that common enemy stuff. Al Kae Duh and OBL are too pure in their Islamic beliefs to mix with infadels just because they have a common enemy.

Additionally, we are to blame for OBL's power b/c when when he and the US had a common enemy (USSR) he worked with the US to gets guns and money. We funded him and gave him power, which he was happy to take from the US before turning on us.

Please note that to the left, the beliefs in these two paragraphs are capable of being held at the same time without causing one's head to explode.

KJ is one clever b******!

Good point counselor.

And don't forget all that 'good stuff' that OBL did in the Sudan and Afganistan (according to Sen. Patty Murray of Washington), which is why Afghanistan was in such great shape when we drove out the Taliban.

Somewhere, someplace, heads are going...

Or maybe they are concerned about you, and the consequential tendency to make insignificant human life. Not to mention the wilfull blindness of the evidence to the contrary. But you go on THP, put your faith in the cards.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Oh c'mon RIslander... I'm sure it would never occur to Bush's two greatest enemies to join forces.... I mean, where's the proof?

You neo-cons are so suspicious.

I seriously doubt there were any permanent links between Iraq and Al-Quaiuoaida, perhaps the occasional trackback, but not direct links.

One could say, Finland was not infatuated with Nazi Germany, but they worked together against a common enemy - Russia.

Honestly, I think whatever help Iraq may have given to terrorists was due to its hatred of us. Of course, Hussein would have been a perfect target for Islamic fundamentalist groups, too. A little bribary might have been used to stay the executioner's axe, perhaps. Remember the fundamentalists had no problem working with us when it was against the Russians in Afghanistan. Strange bedfellows and all that sort of thing.
