Bush Girls Fashion Forward

I492-2005Jan11.txtI was excited to see that the Bush girls will be wearing gowns from one of my favorite designers, Badgley Mischka, to the Inaugural. I think I might have gone with something a tad less revealing, but the designs looked promising.

In general, as long as they can carry it off, I like to see ladies wear something dramatic and tastefully revealing at formal affairs. The contrast between men's formal tuxes and ladies' evening dresses can be very nice as long as the women don't get carried away.

That said, I'm not sure it needs to devolve into an "I can outdo what she did last year" contest, as seems to have become the trend at the Academy Awards. Once necklines start dipping below the sternum or navel or hemlines get slit past mid-thigh, one becomes a topic of conversation (or a pretext for marital fights) rather than an ornament at a civilized evening among adults.

Hopefully both the girls' dresses will be tasteful - it's hard to believe Laura Bush would countenance anything less.

I like the olive green gown.

However, not being a fashion follower, I had no idea who Baglay Mishka is.

Off to google between subjects!

I liked the green one better too.

I tried one very like the blue gown on before the McBall - it was turquoise satin and as The Unit remarked (I was astounded) made my derriere look 'amazing'.

But I wasn't thrilled with the front, and I couldn't get past the idea of a 45-year old woman in turquoise satin! It seemed a bit excessive, even if that's one of my favorite colors - I felt like I should have some fruit on my head or something... And those enormous hoop earrings (shut up Pile). It didn't help when an 18 year-old girl came out of the dressing room with the same dress on as I was pirouetting in front of the mirrors... Her mother goes, "Oh look! you're like TWINS!!!!!

Great moments in mid-life.

As long as it didn't precipitate a mid life crisis for either of you...

Okay...Badgley. I was thinking 'Baglady' for some reason...AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

Posted by: Cricket at January 12, 2005 11:29 AM

Well I've already had at least two, but I'm open to the possibilities of having another one.

Why must you taunt me?

I am coming back to this.

Why must I taunt you?

It's what I do.

When I'm not trash-talkin'

Oh my. Do you remember when Gunne Sax was all the rage? Well, maybe on the West Coast...I always thought the East Coast had a bit more glamour in dressing than the Pacific...it always seemed to be a bit too casual to the point of tackyness.

However, I used to love going up to San Francisco
about every three months to the garment district and we could buy Jessica MacClintock designs with the label cut out for five bucks.

Her Gunne Sax line was for the teen crowd, but she had some pretty sophisticated stuff that was fun too.

I kept all of mine for my daughter. I don't think she will be the blimp size ten I was...I think she will be a four or a six.

Anyway, I used to think that I would LOVE to go to New York and get designer stuff for practically nothing at the second hand stores.

What does a Badgley Mishka run?

Posted by: Cricket at January 12, 2005 12:29 PM

Yes - I graduated from high school in a long white Gunne Sax dress (my high school didn't do the cap & gown - the girls wore long white dresses and the boys wore white dinner jackets and black slacks). I think my mother in law still has the dress in her closet. It was pretty, if typical 70's - white sort of sheer gauzy fabric trimmed with cotton lace.

I have no idea how much a real Badgley Mishka would cost - much more than I would ever pay, that's for sure. I'll never own one, but it's fun to dream :)

I tried on a cream beaded dress in November that reminded me of one - it was lovely but weighed a ton because of all the beadwork. Didn't get it because it was so close to one I already own, but I really liked it.

What is the deal with the models in those pictures? They don't portray a very healthy image for the female body. Is this just another case of the mass media imposing an unrealistic body style goal on the insecure girls of Americer?

And I hear hoop earings come in handy at times.

Yeah, you never know when an impromptu basketball game will break out.

Posted by: Masked Menace© at January 12, 2005 02:04 PM

White dress, blue dress, silver dress? The only thing really important at one of these shindigs is just how long the line at the bar might happen to be.

RIslander, are you trying to make me understand why the former Mrs. threw drinks at you? :)

(just kidding)

Pile is cruising, as is Mr. Menace... The men on this blog have an alarming disregard for their physical safety :) Either that, or they get an inordinate amount of pleasure from teasing the hapless female of the species.

Somewhere (I haven't worn them lately) I have a pair of those big old hoop earrings :D I'm rather fond of them. I used to have some really HUGE, gold wire ones I got from Target - I didn't wear them often but they were fun.

Those dresses are OK if your into NOT supporting JLo's lifestyle. Those dresses won't help the Bush girls pay for a fourth million dollar wedding I tell ya. I sure am glad I didn't say I liked the blue dress.

Posted by: spd rdr at January 12, 2005 05:59 PM

There's nothing wrong with the blue dress, spd.

Personally I don't think it's appropriate for the President's daughter to wear to an Inaugural Ball unless what you want is to excite controversy, but that's just me. Just like I wouldn't wear it to the Marine Corps Ball, but I might to a civilian function, depending on the occasion.

In California that sort of thing wouldn't excite any comment at all - it depends on the crowd. I tried on a lovely dress with a front just like that for the Ball - it looked really great too. It had a halter back instead of the one shown in the picture, but it also dipped down very low in back. I can still get away with it, but just barely.

But even though it was very flattering, I would have been sitting at a dinner table with 4 other couples all evening with a neckline slit almost down to my navel - that's just not really quite polite, or appropriate. So I chose something a little more conservative.

As I said, I don't see anything wrong with ladies showing a little skin in the evening, but there's a line of good taste and good sense.

Am I really the only person in the free world who doesn't give J-Lo's behind about this?

Posted by: MrsPurpleRaider at January 12, 2005 06:24 PM

Actually I don't give a rat's a$$ about what the Bush girls wear either Mrs. Purple, but we got invited to one of them big inaugural shindigs this year, so I'm trying to get myself into the mood.

And I really do like evening dresses.

I hate getting dressed up normally, but I love evening dresses for some reason. Couldn't tell you why. I think it's the drama of it all.

When I was a little girl, my Mom had to catch me once a week to comb and braid my hair and cram shoes on my feet, but put me in a Sunday dress and red shoes and I would twirl around like a little dervish.

Go figure... :)

I like Gianni Versace, but Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta also had some very chic, very classic designs back in the eighties.

I did a lot of my own sewing then, so I sewed Vogue patterns just because of who was designing for them
way back when. I found a beautiful Oscar de la Renta pattern that was sweet rather than sophisticated with a peasant type bodice, and a lovely full skirt, but I also loved some of the
designers in the mid eighties...I sewed my bridesmaid's gowns from a really neat one where the skirt was cut on the bias and the bodice was
semi fitted.

My all time favorite desinger? He was featured in an "I Love Lucy Episode" or two. Don Loper.
The man understood 'feminine.' So did Dior.

Oh, I hear you, Cassandra, but the last dress I cared about was the one Mrs. 'Arris went to Paris to buy.

Posted by: MrsPurpleRaider at January 13, 2005 07:51 PM

Watch out Purple! The lovely and talented Mrs. is feeling feisty this evening :)

Cricket, I used to love Vogue patterns too. They were the only ones that were worth the trouble of sewing.

I had some vintage ones that were truly lovely - designers back then really knew how to make a woman look glamorous. Something of a lost art these days, if you ask me (not that anyone did).
