« Watching My Party Self-Destruct | Main | Aye, Chihuahua... »

May 17, 2006

I need to walk away from this whole thing for a while.

I am starting to feel like I did back in October.

I just do not understand absolutism. I cannot understand this "my way or the highway" mentality. We are a nation of people who believe different things, who have different dreams. Somehow we must find a way to live together in peace.

I can only leave you with the words I wish I'd been calm enough to write this morning:

Voicing opposition to your president or party should not be discouraged. The fact that we have that freedom is one of the things that makes this country great. I was not opposed to those conservatives that split with the president over Miers vigorously fighting that battle. Most did so in a civil and fair manner. There were some, however, that used the dispute to call for the destruction of the Republican Party. I fear that some are now presently pursuing that course over the issue of illegal immigration.

Disagree, dissent, march, email, telephone the White House and the Congress, heck, even mail a brick, but it doesn’t make sense to completely destroy the man who will be leading the country for two more years, or to destroy the Republican Party unless you are ready to accept the agenda of Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid.

It's your call. I've said my piece.

How about them Red Sox, eh? Top of the AL East over a surprisingly resiliant Yankee team that just won't quit when they find themselve down by by nine runs inthe second inning.

And what's all this about "Sir" Paul McCartney doing the "Big D." I'm thinking "Helter Skelter:"

When I get to the bottom
I go back to the top of the slide
Where I stop and turn
and I go for a ride
Till I get to the bottom and I see you again!!!!!
Yeah yeah yeah yeah!

Hey! Wait a minute! Isn't that the theme song for "Immigration Reform?"

Ya know, I think what we need here is a lot more cowbell. Yeah, more cowbell.

What we need here are less smart alecky commenters when I'm trying to be dramatic.

Y'all really know how to ruin a mood.

Actually, I think mr rdr was thinking of The Immigrant Song (click my name)

And just so you know, I hate both of you.

And just so you know, I hate both of you.

You must, if you linked to that video. What have you got against me? :>)

I saw this great column this morning. Glad you linked to it!

What's to hate? Truth?
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

Whoa! A little unexpected celluloid transference going on there. So what was the subject?

Posted by: spd rdr at May 17, 2006 08:37 PM

Cassandra,
Please don't go away again. If the insanity (on both sides) about the immigration situation is getting you down, write about other things for awhwile. You have written numerous profound posts recently on other subjects and your absence would leave a big hole in my bookmark list.

Posted by: Glenn Sutherland at May 17, 2006 09:08 PM

Please rethink this, Cass.
You're one of a kind.

Posted by: Carrie at May 17, 2006 09:11 PM

What Carrie and Glenn said.

I understand the frustration over politics, which is why I try not to blog too much on it. But please don't quit; you're one of the sane voices out there in the political storm.

And I'd miss your insight, humor and wackiness very much.

I've got blisters on me fingers.

Posted by: spd rdr at May 17, 2006 09:51 PM

Maybe people should direct their venom at their locally elected Congresscritter re:this here Immigration issue right here......'stead of the Blog-hostess???

"Hammer of the Gods"

It's OK.

And I'm not really sane FbL. spd can tell you I lost my mind long, long ago. Sadly, no one noticed.

Love you guys :) Even the ones I hate.

'Nite.

g'night

Posted by: spd rdr at May 17, 2006 10:07 PM

I'm worried about Cass pulling the plug again. So, as Ms. RightWing from TOB would do, I'm leaving out a pitcher of frozen Margaritas (Lieutenant Blender's concoction - a taste of tequila heaven), and 4 bottles from a six-pack of Corona. They're on ice, in the sink, if anyone wants to imbibe. If you are not in the mood for alcoholic lubrication, there is Blue Bell Chocolate Mint ice cream in the freezer. Skim milk in the fridge, Oreos in the pantry . Just wipe up the crumbs, put the dishes in the sink. I'm going to bed.

Did someone call for a Doctor?

Posted by: Dr. Harden Stuhl at May 18, 2006 02:07 AM

Absolutism is good. A thing is either right or wrong.

Jesus was an absolutist:
"Whoever is not with me is against me..." (Matthew 12:30)

You're either for enforcing the borders of the US, or you're not. Right now, Congress is not.

Posted by: Barry at May 18, 2006 06:22 AM

And we have a Constitution, so unless that is going to be set aside that enforcement needs to be fully funded and enforced.

The federal courts are undermining enforcement of immigration, which is a big part of why the Border Patrol lets people go. People love to demagogue this issue, but what it really comes down to is this: unless we want to grant the President absolute authority to seize control of the borders in a war status, it just ain't happening.

And we all know that will not happen. The American people, the press, Congress, and the Courts would never stand for it. So either the law must change (which the President is trying to do for the first time in my lifetime) or we must throw up our hands and do nothing.

Of course my party's answer is to bitch and moan and pretend that all the very real problems in our way will just part like the Red Sea if Bush just plays nice. And then in a few years when we have Democrat administration? What then?

Bush is trying for a permanent solution - changing the law. That's the right answer. But the Party of obstruction isn't buying it. Delay, delay, delay.

Yeah. Right.

When I seize absolute power as our "Beloved Leader" (or in the context of this debate, "El Presidente for Life"), and ruthlessly crush my political enemies beneath my bootheel, I promise I will absolutely secure our borders!

Posted by: a former european at May 18, 2006 04:49 PM

Oh afe... you can secure my borders anytime

*running away*
