Reading The Tea Leaves
CardinalPark makes an astute observation regarding The New Realism:
...one thing to me seems almost inevitable about the return of Baker and Company. Israel will no longer feel as though it is a safe, well regarded ally of the US. It was, after all, during the Reagan administration that Israel felt compelled to bomb Osirak (a French developed Iraqi nuclear facility), much to Washington's dismay. It was during Baker's tenure as Secretary of State that the Bush I Administration forced Israel to toe the Oslo line, a line which led predictably to Intifada II and the growth and emboldenment of Hezbollah.I think that the odds have increased that Israel will feel compelled to act much more aggressively and unilaterally to defend itself viz. Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran. Baker and the traditional CIA elites are no friends of Israel, and Israelis know it.
Let's look at what's in the tea leaves this morning. Exhibit A:
Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, who is likely to be the next House Speaker, has announced her intention to “correct the Patriot Act” and wants to criminalize scrutiny of Muslims at airports and elsewhere: “Since September 11, many Muslim Americans have been subjected to searches at airports and other locations based upon their religion and national origin. We must make it illegal.” Since religion is the one factor that the jihadists themselves invariably point to as the motivation for their violent actions, Pelosi is calling upon investigators to ignore the single most important key to understanding jihadist strategy and goals. If she gets her way, any Muslim who is searched at an airport at any time will be able to claim that he is being illegally profiled; a law criminalizing searches of Muslims at airports would have a chilling effect upon any effort to investigate jihad terror activity in the Muslim community.
Exhibit B: Conyers wants to make it against the law for the FBI or Customs Service to consider the religion or ethnic origin of Muslims in terror investigations. Not coincidentally, he has a history of blocking anti-terror measures... and of accepting campaign donations from Arab groups:
Conyers is one of the top recipients of donations from the Arab-American Leadership PAC. And not surprisingly, he has a long history of pandering to Arab and Muslim voters.During the first Gulf War, for instance, Conyers fought FBI outreach efforts in the Arab and Muslim community in Detroit that were designed to gather intelligence on potential cells and protect the home front. Conyers and other Detroit-area Democrats at the time, David Bonior and John Dingell, threatened to hold hearings unless the FBI stopped counterterrorism interviews.
The FBI met with them privately to explain the national security benefits of outreach, but could not allay their concerns. In the end, the FBI backed off. Today, Hamas, Hezbollah and the al-Qaida-tied Muslim Brotherhood are all active in the area.
Conyers has also sponsored one of the Islamists' favorite bills in Congress. HR 635, which has 40 co-signers, would create a select committee to investigate President Bush for allegedly manipulating prewar intelligence and torturing al-Qaida detainees. The goal of his bill is to build grounds for impeachment.
Britain's spy chief has said authorities are tracking almost 30 terrorist plots to "kill people and damage our economy" and expressed concern over future terrorist attacks using chemical, biological or nuclear weapons.MI5 Director Eliza Manningham-Buller said in a speech released Friday the secretive agency had exposed five major plots since last July's London bombings and has witnessed a steady increase in threats since the terror attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001.
"Today we see the use of homemade improvised explosive devices," she said, "but I suggest tomorrow's threat will include the use of chemicals, bacteriological agents, radioactive materials and even nuclear technology."
Manningham-Buller said officials were "aware of numerous plots to kill people and to damage our economy."
"What do I mean by numerous? Five? 10?" she said. "No, nearer 30 that we currently know of."
Currently, authorities are monitoring 1,600 suspects "actively engaged in plotting or facilitating terrorist acts here and overseas." Many have gained training through links to al Qaeda in Pakistan. One task MI5 has been charged with is to figure out what motivates potential terrorists.
FOUR months after Israel launched its onslaught against Hezbollah, the Lebanese guerrillas are back in south Lebanon stronger than ever and armed with more rockets than they had before the conflict, according to Israeli intelligence.During the month-long war, which began on July 12, Hezbollah fired 200 to 250 rockets a day into Israel, killing 43 civilians and terrorising much of the north of the country.
“Since the ceasefire, additional rockets, weapons and military equipment have reached Hezbollah,” said an Israeli intelligence officer. “We assume they now have about 20,000 rockets of all ranges — a bit more than they had before July 12.”
Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, has confirmed the Israeli estimate. In a recent interview with al-Manar, the Hezbollah television station, he claimed his organisation had restocked its arsenal and now held at least 30,000 rockets, sufficient for five months of war.
Israeli military intelligence has warned the government that renewed fighting with Hezbollah, which it regards as a terrorist organisation, should be expected as early as next spring.
Thank God those awful Jews backed off so Hezbollah could disarm! The voice of the international community has been vindicated!
Exhibit E: Some British academicians rise up in outrage...against the Jews:
With typical bigotry and misguidedness, British academics have begun a boycott of publishing research by Israelis. The International Advisory Board for Academic Freedom warns against a “silent boycott” in Britain against Israeli institutes of higher education.
The council said that Israeli researchers wishing to publish articles in Britain were asked to remove the name of which ever Israeli academic institute they belonged to as a condition for publishing their articles.
This “silent boycott” was taking place alongside other outright boycotts on Israel. An article published on Ynet in September revealed that dozens of academics worldwide called for a boycott on Israeli academic institutes until “Israel ends its occupation of the Palestinian territories”.
And in the United States, we are considering negotiating with Iran and Syria, the two primary supporters of Hezbollah, notwithstanding the fact that Iran has publicly threatened to wipe Israel off the map, all while publicly preparing to dismantle our own defenses.
All hail the sober realism of the New Direction! The only way the half vast editorial staff could possibly feel any safer is if we were a Jew.

Pelosi and Co. are going to fall apart like a cheap suit as they reduce themselves to children raiding the proverbial cookie jar!
America spoke but the Democrats heard what they wanted to hear. The imposion of the democratic party will be interesting to observe.

The problem will be that so many people still get their information from the "mainstream" media...which will spin efforts by the Right to keep the Leftys in check as vindictiveness.
Of course when the Leftys did it, it was OK...

Between Conyers and Pelosi, this is exactly the same kind of muddled thinking that allowed 9/11 to happen in the first place. Inevitably, just like "The-Wall-Builder" Gorelick before them, these two will eventually sit in judgement of their own culpability, and naturally will absolve themselves of responsibility.
Throw Murtha into the mix and you hit the Trifecta of idiocy.

It's all very interesting, and I cannot blame Israel for feeling deserted. It's as if all reasoning is being sucked out the window and replaced with "Appeasing savages" It's filled the air like a thick souped fog; so thick it's caused blindness.
What is looming in the background and also erecting to haunt our future is how so many leaders and influencial voices have been taken out and or are leaving their positions. It's as if the chess board is getting wiped clean and new pieces are taking shape. New game? No...just a shift of strategy on good vs evil.
God bless Israel and the western world! I think it's getting to the time to start fighting the enemy with psychological warfare and take off all the political corret gloves. Perhaps it's time to warn them that if any other attack happens that mecca and other places that they hold sacred will be targeted. Let them know that we hold the value of life over that of any building.

Very funny, Cassandra. I'm the cartoon character with a cloud over his head this morning. These idiots really would destroy us to display a lunatic ideology.

Throw Murtha under the bus! I'm still laughing about the "Trifecta", Daveg.

It will be interesting to watch the fall of the Democrats. I will predict now that their brief coup will be a dismal failure. They inherited two years of what? Not enough time to do any agenda pushing. It isn't always bad to be an underdog. This will invigorate the Republicans and maybe now they will listen to their constituents. I am already counting three days and the Democrats haven't done shit....
It is our job the rest of America [Conservatives of different political ilks] to remind them every single day about how they promised to accomplish things...
I don't know about you guys but I plan on having a blast...
Political DYsfunctionalists the lot of em...

They're off to a tremendous start!
Remember the "Culture of Corruption" they were harping on, right up until William "I'm Two-Thirds Clinton" Jefferson emerged as the Keystone Cop of corrupt politicos? Cold cash, indeed! Well, here we are on the cusp of seeing Rep. John "ABSCAM" Murtha elevated to the position of Majority Leader. Could there be any better example of the inherent cynicism of their previous squawking about corruption? It appears that actual corruption wasn't their issue, rather it seems that their problem was that they weren't getting enough snouts in the trough.
And who do we have leading the Senate side? Sen. Harry "Squeaky Clean" Reid, a man with an alacrity for astute and inordinately profitable land investments rivaled only by his esteemed collegue Hillary Clinton's astonishing and surprising adroitness in cattle futures.
Sadly, they will be sheltered by a complicit media, and blogs, Rush, and Hugh aren't going to be enough to unmask this travesty to the general voting public, most of whom couldn't care anyway as long as the entitlement checks keep rolling in.
I'm still laughing about the "Trifecta", Daveg.
Thank you, thank you. I'm here all week. Tip the veal and try your waitress. Good night, everybody!

I'm not going to argue with you actus. And it's not a lie - what they seek to do is force law enforcement to remove religion and ethnic origin as one of many screening criteria, with penalties for non-compliance which is absolutely ludicrous. You only need to review what happened with TSA in the wake of 9/11 to see exactly what happens when you do this kind of thing.
But you are not interested in reality. And neither is John Conyers or Nancy Pelosi.

"And it's not a lie - what they seek to do is force law enforcement to remove religion and ethnic origin as one of many screening criteria"
Thats different than criminalizing scruty of muslims. For example: you can still search muslims. Muslims don't get a pass.
Posted by: actus at November 15, 2006 08:36 AM
Don't be disingenuous. The practical effect of that law is to raise a defense and a cause of action against the US government for going about the business of trying to keep us safe, and it doesn't matter in the end whether there is merit to those claims or not - the government still has to spend money defending against them so they make rules saying "don't search anyone who is obviously a Muslim".
And then you get stupidity like having my husband, an officer in the United
States Marine Corps traveling under orders, practically strip searched every SINGLE time we travel because they know he will NOT object though that is AGAINST THE RULES. Meanwhile I breeze right through security.
It is demonstrably unfair as well as against the rules and it happens all the time. But he doesn't make a stink because he is not trying to cause trouble - he understands that they are just trying to keep us safe and we have to put up with idiotic stuff from jerks who think their individual feelings are more important than saving lives.
What a concept.
And they do get a pass - the stats have shown that with the rule changes the TSA actively avoids confrontations and lets people go rather than generate complaints that might result in litigation. So you are wrong.

As someone who travels from time to time (even overseas! Imagine!), I encounter travel security of different strains all the time.
At Charles De Gaulle (an airport outside of Paris France), we recently stood in line for quite a while as all our carry-on luggage was inspected. An Arabic women in full chador was also boarding the flight. Her veil was not removed to check her ID vs. her face, and all her garments were not "tap" searched(patted down) as I was was and most of the rest of the normally clothed people (men and women). This happened ten feet in front of me, so I was not confused.
The TSA in the US is also full of petty tyrants at the gates who sometimes enjoy inflicting their petty powers over normal citizens, choosing some of the strangest "random" individuals to be searched (such as Cass's husband). So Conyers and Dingell of Michigan (which has a large Arabic sub-popoulation, poor things) will no doubt move to "stop" any of that nasty "profiling" (like I wish that was going on!) in the name of all that is good and decent and Politically Correct. But we still won't be able to crack jokes in the security line at Reagan National (there is a sign there that prohibits that-TRUE!).
I just hope this doesn't end up getting a plane load of people killed in the near future.

I'm betting that foreign intel services will stop sharing quite so generously with ours. They'll (rightly) conclude that -- with the likes of Alcee Hastings in charge -- we can't be trusted to keep a secret.

That's already happening.
With all the classified information being published in the NYT, anyone in the intel community would have to be nuts to:
1. expect ANYTHING shared with US intelligence to be kept in confidence
2. express a candid opinion on ANY report to higher-ups, which is one of the many very good reasons even things which don't, on the surface, seem to "need" to be classified, sometimes are. It's the only way people feel safe about saying what they really think without fear of repercussions, much less seeing it on the front pages of a national newspaper. Now everyone is walking on eggshells - you'd have to be f**king insane to tell your bosses what you really think on a report with your name on it in the current environment.
Thanks a lot, NY Times.

LOL, it's just like the "anonymous" employee satisfaction reports we do each year. Yes, it's a very large company, but the small size of my biz unit and my unique position within it make it pretty easy to determine my input. My boss must think I just love it here!

On exhibit E, may I respectfully suggest that you insert the word `some' repeatedly [as a rule of thumb, wherever it would be grammatically correct so to do]. I hope very few British academics are doing what is described here (I would hope for none, but I make a point of never wishing for the impossible); I am sure it is a smallish minority. Mainly, I would suspect, the same rabid minority who got the Anti-Israel decision passed by the Lecturer's union in the first place.
Mayhap the same or worse is happening in the USA.
I would add that the very fact that they're "British" publications means they're not very important; important journals are always "international", whoever the editor in chief is (I know, I am one and my publishers would scream if the journal I edited was described as anything other than "international").
I say this, not to excuse, or to minimise, but in the interests of reality. Anti-semitism is a world-wide problem and I'm getting tired of hearing Britain described as a sink of it (or as Rhymes with Right recently said, a "cess-pit of anti-semitism").

Shalom and Greetings from Israel -
What's doubly depressing is that this is happening just as Israel is finally shaking off the last of its Oslo-era delusions.
Since Arafart died and the Palestinian-administered areas have descended into chaos, there's been a steady trickle of editorial-page breast-beating by disillusioned lefties. The explosive failures in Gaza and Lebanon - two places from which we retreated at our loony left's urging to "give peace a chance" - have only accelerated that, and forcefully stripped the blinders from many eyes.
We are in for a big-time crisis of confidence that will result in a rightward shift similar to what happened after the left bungled the Yom Kippur war.
Which makes it very sad that the US is tipping back into what-me-worry, la-la loonyness just at this time.

But thats not the rule.

Which stats?
"But he doesn't make a stink because he is not trying to cause trouble - he understands that they are just trying to keep us safe and we have to put up with idiotic stuff from jerks who think their individual feelings are more important than saving lives."
It looks like we'd actually be safer if you did complain, and got them to stop searching people who shouldn't be searched.
