Sully: Social Stigma for Me, But Not for Thee!

Savor the hypocrisy:

When is it OK to shame and stigmatize those who don't live according to your particular world view?

"We have to create a social stigma". That is really nice, Andrew. Several decades ago, certain people thought that it was right to "create a social stigma", involving lots of nasty expressions and social ostracism, against people who wanted to have sex with people of their own gender. People once thought about sexual morality in much the same way that some people think about those who delight in driving gas guzzling cars. I do not know: maybe driving a large car is morally worse than two men bonking one another, but many people might take a different view. Sullivan is a man who has benefited from the liberties afforded to him by the United States, and has written eloquently about the plight of gay people and their struggle to be accepted as normal. It is particularly disappointing to see him joining what amounts to the moral bullying tactics of the Greens and their hysterical invocations of global doom.

When Sully says it's OK, silly!

Enviro-activists go all terrorist on us. The Washington Post story is here. I have to say that while I completely abhor the violence, I don't abhor the sentiment. Parking a 7-foot high Hummer in your neighborhood is about as irritating as watching one careen down the small streets of Provincetown. We have to create a social stigma toward people totally contemptuous of the environment.

These owners of massive, gas-guzzling behemoth cars deserve social opprobrium.

Gosh, Andrew. Are you willing to apply that standard the next time someone who believes homosexuality is morally wrong treats you with "social opprobrium"?

Somehow I doubt it.

That post had an almost Greenwaldian grandeur about it, didn't it? Maybe it would be better if we all just had one standard of civilized behavior for everyone and accepted that in a diverse world, we don't really owe each other approval or validation of each other's lifestyles, so long as we're not going around vandalizing property or committing violent acts.

What a concept.

Tolerance for me but not thee....

Oh for crying out loud..
Just ACTUALLY read the title...

I need coffee...ugh.

I'd much rather drive my full-sized van (when the Harley just won't do) than...yeesh.

If that makes me a bad person, I'll live with it...

If we Capitalists have anything like a "fatwah" in our arsenal, can we smack one upside Sully's hard head?

I've said elsewhere that even should we defeat the Islamic Jihad and put it to the same bin that Nazism and Communism is in (partway for the latter), another group of ideological pure folks will take up the slack. And that group, in my view, will be Greenpeace and their Church of Ryback. Otherwise known as environmentalism.

Wayback as in medieval and Sumerian times, of course.

Oh for crying out loud..

Women can read each other's minds, no?

Social stigmas are now socially acceptable?

Posted by: Cricket at July 21, 2007 03:59 PM

Did I say that environmental fascism is an anti-human movement? However, after the Islamofascism thingi is done, we'll solve that issue too.

"Social stigmas are now socially acceptable?"

Yes. Ask anyone who smokes.

Posted by: Brett at July 22, 2007 02:29 PM

Ha! Good one on the smoking, Brett.

Cass, the hypocrisy of this reminds me of a post at Zombietime about an Al Gore appearance in Marin County CA where the parking lot was full of SUVs http://zombietime.com/gore_in_marin/

It is not really hypocrisy MaryAnn. After all, Gore actually believes he is the superior specimen of humanity, and thus because of his gifts to mankind, he deserves special treatment. And so does his special club of the anointed, so to speak. And thus he acts exactly as he believes and his followers do as well.

Just cause they tell lies in public doesn't change their real beliefs.

Bring

It

On!

You can't stigmatize me. Everyone thinks I'm cool, even if they can't afford to feed me.

Posted by: Hummer at July 23, 2007 10:34 AM

Gore is also a law unto himself. Last week, the Goracle asked for a sacrifice of Chilean Sea Bass.

Time to clean the fridge and alphabetize the spice rack and plan on how to use up the jello.

Posted by: Cricket at July 23, 2007 11:15 AM

As I was pulling out of church yesterday, a yellow Hummer in front of me had one of those extra cost "support wildlife" license plates.

Got contradiction?

I thought, what a pansy.

For a Hummer, that is. I'm sure he could've still kicked a Range Rover's @ss.

Posted by: Hummer at July 23, 2007 11:25 AM

...and plan on how to use up the jello.

Oh goody. Is it lime?
