Operation Comfort - AmpSurf

Glenn Norberg sends:

We are having another AmpSurf session for amputee vets here in Pismo Beach, CA. Again, through Operation Comfort, serving Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. The dates will be September 23-27 2007. Donations to Operation Comfort appreciated. Last year we had about 20 guys and gals here, learning how to surf, for the stoke of the year!. This year we are hoping for the same.

If you'd like to read more about AmpSurf, there are some great pix from last year's trip here. This is how it all began:

A little background of how we came to be surfing in Pismo Beach begins with Derek, who came to me and said that he had surfed most of his life and now he had lost his leg in Iraq and wanted to keep surfing and would Operation Comfort take the amputees surfing. I said, "Derek, do you want to surf on one leg?" and he said "yes m'am I do" so I said "Ok, if you can find someone who can teach you how to surf on one leg, then Operation Comfort will raise the money to take you." Derek then found Rodney Roller and the ball started rolling. we set the date...

Operation Comfort sponsors all sorts of great events for the wounded vets at Brooke and their families. This is a huge morale builder, as getting out of the hospital and having the chance to do normal things and once again prove they can overcome challenges the way they did before they were wounded is the key to a successful recovery. These men and women are truly phenomenal. Most of us would just curl up into a ball and give up if faced with the challenges they face every day, but attack their physical therapy programs with the same grit and determination they brought to boot camp - and they're out in the world surfing, biking, playing golf and hockey, and skiing too.

Is there anything our vets can't do? Not unless they don't have the money.

Drop by and hit the tip jar or send them a check. I just did.

PS: closer to home, you'll be glad to know that OPERATION FRESH AIR III is on target for our third day of fishing in the park. Currently we are scheduled for October 20th (Carrie, correct me if I'm all screwed up).
