Berkeley: Marine Recruiters = Porn
"In the same way that many communities limit the location of pornographic stores, that's the same way we feel about the military recruiting stations," said PhoeBe sorgen [sic], an initiative proponent and a member of the city's Peace and Justice Commission. "Teenagers that really want to find them will be able to seek them out and find them, but we don't want them in our face."
You may recall that Michelle Malkin covered the defacement of the Marine Corps recruiting station in Berkeley by Code Pink last October:
“If there are to be no wars, there can be no warriors,” said Dianne Budd, one of the organizers.
“We found out a few days ago and decided to make their lives miserable,” she said, pinning up “RECRUITERS LIE, CHILDREN DIE” posters on the office windows. “We want people to know that it’s here and we want to shut them down. If people had been in there we were ready to hand out information about GI rights. We just want to speak the truth.”
Apparently it wasn't enough for Code Pink to deface private property. Now, some activists are trying to rush the measure through before it can be placed before the voters in November, claiming they need to "protect" the city's youth. Just what they are protecting youth from is unclear... perhaps the evil influence of the voters of the city of Berkeley?
Or the meddling of the city council, who might be tempted to "water down" the measure if they are allowed the chance to interfere?
In response to a Marine Corps recruiting office established in Berkeley last year, local activists are trying to make it more difficult for future recruiting centers to open in the city.
If passed by a majority of Berkeley voters, a proposed initiative would require military recruiting offices and private military companies in Berkeley to first acquire a special use permit.
To obtain this permit, a business must hold public hearings and a public comment period.
If the initiative passes, recruitment offices could not be opened within 600 feet of residential districts, public parks, public health clinics, public libraries, schools or churches.
Currently, a recruiting office is held to the same standards as most other businesses, which do not require a public hearing or have limits on where offices can be established.
The primary purpose of the new zoning law would be to protect young people from undue influence from military recruiters, supporters say.
"We feel that as a community we need to protect the youth," Adams said. "We're trying to level the playing field."
Berkeley Councilmember Dona Spring said she supports the wording of the initiative, but said she would prefer the issue be passed by council so it can be enacted faster rather than waiting for the initiative to be placed on the ballot in November.
"I think we should just go ahead and pass it," she said. "We can't take everything to the voters."
But some proponents are hesitant to pass the ordinance through the council because they feel it might be watered down by other council members.
What these activists seem determined to do, is to "protect" the youth of Berkeley from the dangerous influence of democracy and freedom of speech.
Liberal fascists, indeed.

Judging from the neighborhoods where Marine recruiting offices tend to be located, I was under the impression they already were regulated under the same zoning law as pornography stores.

Actually there was a Marine recruiting office about three blocks from the very tony neighborhood I used to live in, in the historic district of Rockville :p
So that's not always true. I would have loved to have bought a house there, but we'd have had to have mortgaged our immortal souls.

I'm glad to hear there are exceptions somewhere. :)

Okayfine. If they would like to run their little community without any reminders of everything that they are not, I'd say let em have at it.
And I were King, or a Congress Widget, I'd introduce legislation to withhold federal funds for, well, anything.
Finally, to the Berkeley Commissars I might ship a few gross of these in place of the usual Federal revenue stream, ya know, as a public service gesture.

Just let the Japanese, Afghanistanis, or Iraqis annex Berkley. Sacrifices must be made for alliances, after all.

I think that wins comment of the day , Ymar :p
Either that, or Grim's first comment!

"Teenagers that really want to find them will be able to seek them out and find them, but we don't want them in our face."
Ironically enough, that's the exact same way that I feel about lefty liberal anti-military douchebags.
Small world, neh?

If Marines were in their faces, they would have to then take a bath. Sometimes that is a problem for some.

But this is soooo Berkeley! The Peoples' Republic of Berkeley is such a dinosaur - aging Venceremos Brigade members drooling in their bongs. I guess the retards got tired of sitting in trees (treetards!), bothering UC, its other favorite bogeyman.
Cut off federal funding to Berkeley. Locate the recruiting office in adjacent Emeryville. This largely industrial township is where all the biotech companies located when Berkeley declared a Luddite Jihad on them. Wacko heads would explode.
FWIW, UC Berkeley has several ROTC programs.

I find it interesting that they feel the need to suppress these "businesses".
I mean, if the USMC wasn't getting many recruits from there, would they really bother putting one there?
As a gummint operation, they don't actually have a full-on need to use their money wisely, but I can't imagine their recruiting budget allows them to **pointlessly** open a storefront in a place where they aren't likely to have success.
And if they are having success, then it is, in fact, an open effort to suppress them. Some interesting legal challenges, there.

I live in Berkeley, and I even live in Dona Spring's district. Not all of us in Berkeley are completely off our heads. I happen to find the initiative to be contemptible.
I went downtown today to see a bit of Code Pink's theatrics for myself. It inspired me to step inside the recruitment office to offer a few words of support and to thank the Marines there for their service.
I like my town despite the crazy politics. As a federal taxpayer, I must disagree with the calls to withdraw federal funds to Berkeley (I send a lot of money to Washington, and I'd like to see a little come back). I'm not sure how much more I'm willing to take, though. It will be a shame if I have to vote with my feet someday.

My Mossberg is getting hungry. Communist Bastards.
Liberals do have one good purpose: They are good for target practice.
Posted by: GMC USN RET at January 31, 2008 03:21 AM
The Marines will be just fine. They have a noble purpose.
The majority of those who oppose the Marines spend their pathetic lives running from one fringe cause to another, hoping in vain to give their lives meaning, all the while missing the fact that their privelege was secured with the blood of men far braver than they shall ever be.

The Marines held at Khe Sahn...They can hold at Berkeley. I just wish they'd call in a few fire missions....
Posted by: Disgusted at February 4, 2008 10:25 AM
LOL! "Disgusted", I love it! The Marines took Iwo Jima; Berkeley ain't s---t.
I am the proud mom of a young Marine and adopted mom to many of his friends. These young men are the best, the brightest and the very finest this nation has to offer. No offspring of those code pink retards can hold a candle to them.
To "Bill", THANK YOU for going into see the recruiters there -- boy, if I could get the time off from work, I'd drive the length of the state just to decorate the outside of their office with patriotic bunting, thank you notes from school kids and fill their office with balloons, gift baskets, and red, white, and blue flowers!

Thank you, Sue, for raising a fine young man. And please thank him for us.
It says a lot that young men and women continue to serve in today's atmosphere. It says a lot about their parents, too.

It's a shame that laws suppressing harassment are so easily ignored in situations like this.
It's kinda like ... people are very supportive of freedom of speech. Unless of course you disagree with their political views - then you need to be suppressed.

From what I've read this morning, seems their position is too extreme for many of the liberals out there and they are rethinking the resolution.

I AM A UNTIED STATES MARINE. I GUARANTEE IF THAT TOWN WAS BEING OVERRAN BY THE TERROIST.THE FIRST THING OUT OF THOSE LIBERALS MOUTHS WOULD BE "WHERE ARE THE MARINES".THEY EXPECT THIS COUNTRY TO BE FREE,BUT HOW DO THEY EXPECT US TO DO IT.FREEDOM ISNT FREE IT COMES AT THE COST OF BLOOD.I SUPPORT ALL MY MARINE BROTHERS AND SISTERS,AND I GUARANTEE THEY WOULD BE HESITANT TO SAY ANYTHING TO OUR FACES. They can bash us all the want.
It is these people who burn our flag
it is these people that will NEVER get those tingly "chills" that run up and down your body as the Colors are raised and the anthem is played.
it is these people that will never know how much of an honor it is, to wear a US military uniform.
it is these people that do not understand, that the flag has red stripes for a reason.....
it is these people that we fight for, and pay the ultimate sacrifice for, just so that they have the freedom to express such emotions.
Hold the line troops, they will never breach our ranks.

It is the Soldier
Father Dennis Edward O'Brien
It is the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us freedom to demonstrate.
It is the Soldier
who salutes the flag,
who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.
You leathernecks got Air Support.

I hate them hippies. I wish they would understand that this world is not a place where we can pretend that we have no enemy's. If it wern't for people like the soldiers and marines we would be nazi germany or Communist Russia. So they can take there pot smoking asses to another country if they don't like what we need to do for this one.

why aren't all of these activists out there protesting against al qaeda?
why? because they are afraid that they'll get their head chopped off!!!
because, it's easy (safe) to protest against the good guys (the marines.. the president... the US...)
when these activists actually start to put their heads on the line (like a marine does on an almost daily basis) that's when i'll start having any sort of respect for them.

Wow...all I have is shock. I am by no means conservative, but after this disgraceful display, I can definately say I am not a liberal either. Why was no one arrested for defacing private property? Are the police in this town even afraid of these hippie-mongers? How are they 'stopping the war' by running the Marines out of town? Pseudo-logic...brilliant.

I actually grew up in Berkeley, so I unfortunately have first-hand knowledge of the ridiculousness of these so-called "activists." What a horrible waste of time this issue is! Personally, I'm against the Iraq war, I think diplomacy should always be the way to go (unless you know for sure you've been outright attacked by a specific government; in that case, nuke 'em). HOWEVER, Code Pink should just leave the recruiters office alone and instead educate kids so they can make the decision themselves! Speaking of which, why don't these people ever care about the failing school system in Berkeley?! Or about the outrageous property laws in Berkeley?!

They're too busy Speaking Truth to Power by doing Pilates in front of the Marine Recruiting station.
What a bunch of whack jobs :p

It's a wonderful thing that our country protects the rights of the pin headed views of a few. But sometimes I wish they'd get a life. Preferrably somewhere that they could live it in their little peace filled fantasy world. It's a shame to waste one drop of sweat much less blood of our armed forces to protect the lives and views of these folks. But that's just my humble opinion. Glad I don't have to see that in my town everyday. It's embarrassing.
Posted by: Michael at February 13, 2008 05:02 PM
Thanks God we have the U.S. Marines to protect our nation, especially having butt-heads like these who can't protect themselves... from themselves.
Posted by: Serge at February 13, 2008 06:21 PM
I think all of the recruiters should park themselves right outside the university and have a protest of their own. I pay taxes also and my money goes to the local schools where I live. I want to see my tax dollars at work...that means recruiters in the schools finding quality young men and women to fill all ranks in all services. BTW...I am a recruiter...maybe I will ask to get stationed in Berkeley? What is wrong with these people? Find a new cause...maybe they should do some public service like firefighting, EMT, police officer...oops, they probably don't qualify anyway...you still have to take a drug test and pass something resembling the enlistment screening test and ASVAB.

who are these people to say an 18 year old man can't decide for himself whether he wants to fight for his country or not?
just more pompous liberals who think they know whats best for us all
stop trying to protect people from themselves.....
it makes you look like a jerkoff!!!!!!
