The Obamas Need Your Help...

...in choosing a name for the First Pooch:

The only thing left to pick is the name, and Mrs. Obama said she is not a fan of her daughters’ choices.

“There are names floating around and they're bad," Mrs. Obama said in the interview. "You listen and you go – like, I think, Frank was one of them. Frank! Moose was another one of them. Moose. I said, well, what if the dog isn't a moose? Moose. I'm like, no, come on, let's work with the names a little bit."

Since Obama announced on Election Night that his daughters had “earned” a dog, there has been a lot of speculation and input from dog-lovers around the country. The president has said for months that he was looking for a shelter dog that was hypoallergenic.

Mrs. Obama said she took some advice from Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, who owns two Portuguese water dogs and had lobbied the first family to choose the breed. But overall, she said found the level of excitement about the family’s dog “surprising.”

They could always go with something nostalgic, as Ted Kennedy did when he named his Porty, "Splash". A stuffed marmoset will go out by parcel post to the cleverest entry.

How about "CHAPPY" if it is a water dog?

Posted by: vet66 at February 26, 2009 09:49 AM

Well, were it not for the fact that I am against animal abuse, I'd suggest naming a Water Dog "Ted" or "Teddy".

"Earmark"

Cass, off topic: you had on here a posting a while back showing/referencing graphs on job losses in this recession. The concept being that the NYT said job losses are higher than they've been since the Great Depression, but in fact as a percentage of the workforce they're lower than in the last two recessions. I can't find it here. Can you give me the link? Thanks.

Given Obama's lament about Americans lack of foriegn language skills and his campaign rhetoric I figure "Auric Flatius" would be appropriate.

How 'bout Mo, for Mighty Oak.

You know Portuguese Water Dogs are fairly rare. I saw that only 15 of them appeared at the big Crufts Dog Show in England. So the puppies are pretty doggone expensive. And since the dogs are rare, I doubt that very many of them ever show up in a shelter. Now the Obama dog is supposedly going to be a "shelter dog"

What do you think the odds are that a Portuguese Water Dog breeder will suddenly "donate" a spare puppy to a shelter near the White House? It makes you paws to reflect just how cynical this White House is. How 'bout naming the puppy "Hypocrisy"?

Perhaps they should name the pooch "Screwed".

Posted by: Yu-Ain Gonnano at February 26, 2009 12:42 PM

OMG :p

Those last two are classic.

For the Kennedy fans: How about 'Chap' as in Chappaquiddick?
Or for the Marxists "Che", 'Castro' or " Chavez"
Or 'Mud'!

"Pwned"

Just like the rest of the Jack Handy's who voted for BO, Mensa Joe and the EU Socialists wannabes.

I think they should name it either Soros or Gitmo. I really think they should stick to a stuffed dog though, I wouldn't wish that family on my worst enemy!

Posted by: Upnorthlurkin at February 26, 2009 05:45 PM

DL Sly -

"Mighty Oak", as in "from little ACORNs grow?

Haaaaah!!!

Posted by: MathMom at February 26, 2009 08:18 PM

You got it, MM!! I'm glad somebody did. I was starting to wonder 'bout y'all.

Running low on ens again? Geez, give a guy a little advance notice, okay? Do you have any idea how long it takes to carve just *one* of those things?

Posted by: BillT at February 27, 2009 07:28 AM

DL, at least someone got yours. Appearently I was a little to obscure with "Gold Farter".

Posted by: Yu-Ain Gonnano at February 27, 2009 10:45 AM

Bill, now that you've grad-jeeated a whole new group of Fiddly-Bit Flyers, I figure you've got time on your hands -- at least a minute or three.
heh

Yu-Ain, FWIW, I loved it. I almost didn't put mine up after I saw that.

I was starting to wonder 'bout y'all.

Didn't mean we didn't *get* 'em -- just meant we were wondering how to *top* 'em...

BTW, the fling-wing kaydets merely graduated from classroom work to cockpit work -- they're now in the *application* phase of training. And doing well, I might add. Their confreres in Class 68 are now in line units or are going through instructor training.

Whooo hooo! You're doing yeoman's work there, TJ....take an extra en --- out of the discard pile, of course.

Ummmmm -- the ens *are* the discards.

Got a huge market for ems over here.

They're Muslims, yanno...

Posted by: BillT at February 27, 2009 01:12 PM

Guess that explains the half-vast appearance....

Posted by: M.Lou Winsky at February 27, 2009 01:28 PM

Since the breed was Teddy's idea, and it is a "water" dog, I think Mary Jo Kopechne is a perfect name.

Posted by: Nav1gat0r at February 27, 2009 04:25 PM

lets see...
his daughter sasha is named after alexander pushkin
his other daugher is named after malia, the last name of the most famous biographer of populist pushkin..

so i would say...
Laika

Zasha? (nah, too close to his daughters name)
Sashenka (nah, too close to his daughters name)

Sezja
Vassily
Yerik
Yeva

Posted by: artfldgr at February 27, 2009 04:31 PM

forgot to say..

if i win with Laika, then instead of sending me a stuffed marmoset... can we put together a package for a soldier who has no family (and is alone)? or send him the marmoset? i think it will do better there than here with me.

I think in this way, everyone wins bigger.

Posted by: artfldgr at February 27, 2009 05:00 PM

I tell you what.

Whoever wins, I'll make a donation to Soldier's Angels in your name, OK?

Maybe that will be our new "prize".

He should call his new pet "Media, the lapdog."

"Roll over Media, fetch Media, bark Media"

I got this idea from PeoplesCube.com

The Portuguese Water Dog are wonderful pets, their curly hairs are so handsome and they are good for allergic people. A good choice for the Obama family, now some questions remain: male or female, how will they call it?
