Catch 22

You've got to love this guy. The laughs just keep on coming:

President Barack Obama says the U.S. hasn't done a good job sorting out who should be released from the Guantanamo Bay detention center.

Because, you understand, though International Law forbids us to hold undocumented freedom fighters absent sufficient evidence to convict them in civilian courts, using rules of criminal procedure designed for American law enforcement officials acting under color and authority of American law, a real president would have told the International Community to "Talk to the hand", thus preserving our legitimacy and moral authority in the eyes of a waiting world.

Obama says in a broadcast interview that some of the people released from the facility in Cuba have rejoined terrorist groups. He also says U.S. officials have not always been effective in determining which prisoners will be a danger once they are let go.

The blinding speed with which this man's mind works is truly soul shattering.

But he says the Bush administration's policy of holding detainees for years on end with no trials is "unsustainable,' and has only fueled anti-American sentiments.

Unsustainable... and yet it should have been sustained... umm... somehow. Without violating International Law.

In a taped interview with CBS' "60 Minutes," he also disputes former Vice President Dick Cheney's claim that plans to close Guantanamo will make America less safe.

Duh. The idea that releasing more recidivist terrorists increases - in any way - the number of whack jobs out there who would like to see the United States go [poof!] is utterly absurd. This is so self-evidently self-evident that even the BusHitler should have flashed on it.

Alas. If only we'd had a president who was smart enough to bring the awesome clarity of hindsight to his decisions. It's enough to make baby Jesus cry.

Kill 'em all, let Allah sort them out...

I'm all behind the Baby Jesus.
But the rest of this circus is just blind bullshit, on meth.

My God, We the People are such a trusting, gullible lot.

He also says U.S. officials have not always been effective in determining which prisoners will be a danger once they are let go.

Take a peek at the recidivism rates for violent criminals in the US -- over 60% of 'em are re-arrested and returned to prison within three years.

So far, the folks running Gitmo have a *far* better track record than the US Criminal Justice System...

I remind all here, including the youngsters who may have been deprived of an education that included political history negative to democrats, of the exploits of Michael Dukakis.

Michael Dukakis is the poster boy of democratic incompetence and what the French refer to as "No Balls Oblige" if I may be so bold. It doesn't require much effort to obtain a picture of Dukakis looking like a whack-a-mole in a battle tank during a presidential campaign. Worse, remember his response to a question regarding his position on capital punishment if his wife Kitty had been raped by a recidivist let go from prison on an early release program? His ratings lost 7 points overnight and probably cost him the election.

The democrats are good at only one thing, namely, spending OPM - Other People's Money. With apologies to the French, democrats run from the military like the French from a cap pistol. They never do the "deed" but are great at foreplay, I mean negotiation and appeasement.

We knew this was coming...

Just a few suggestions if President Obama happens to read "Villainous Company" this morning:
1) Faux outrage and singing Kumbaya will not solve the situation.
2) Sending out David Axelrod to gin up 'astroturf' populism to show us the way will not help.
3)Attacking what was arguably pragmatically effective that was done by the previous administration will not improve bipartisan help in crafting a solution
4) Worrying about 'world opinion' will not help, as 'The World' doesn't really give a damn about us anyways. President Obama should worry about upholding our Constitution and protecting the American people.
5) And speaking of the Constitution, granting 'habeas corpus' rights to non-citizen, non-resident enemy combatants WEAKENS the Constitutional rights of all the people that are owed those rights, and actually cherish and protect those rights, sometimes with their lives.

Not that he would actually pay any attention to the grumblings of one anonymous citizen, but I did want to get that off my chest.

Gee Don, you just took away the entire democratic platform of governance. You need to get more "Changy" and less "Judgey"...I couldn't write that without laughing.

I wonder how many, if any, of the democrats in power have bothered to subject themselves to the discomfort of actually reading the Constitution?

Posted by: vet66 at March 22, 2009 10:33 AM

Don, you ignorant slut... :p

Posted by: It's showtime... at March 22, 2009 10:59 AM

Well, let's see, uh, we had them at Gitmo because there was evidence they were guilty of terror acts against the US.

After releasing one into the wild, uh, the world, he reverts to his pre-captive, terrorist mentality because of his detention, not because he was a principled jihadist to begin with, and got caught, but because we jailed him for his activities in either planning or carrying out said plans of acts of terror in the first place.

Truly, Obama has a dizzying intellect.

*adjusts tie, runs hand over pompadour, turns and asks, *
Have we ever done the news together?

The little guy on my left shoulder nods as I read what Don said. The, the fellow on my right shoulder agrees with Camo. And Yossarian just groaned.

All in all, this post cuts to the quick with a scalpel.

Yet another point of light in the growing, dare I say progressive, darkness.

Oh by the way, where's the keg?

Posted by: Pinto at March 22, 2009 12:44 PM

Would you two get a room? And preferably not a newsroom? I think we have seen enough gratutious acts of domestic bliss with the Obamas. Seeing you both go at it would cause a massive upheaval in Gaia's crust.

Oh! My bad. I thought she said Ron, but it was Don.

Martini?

Nup, Don Martin was the house cartoonist for MAD magazine.

Oh. Martini.

Never mind.

Well, at least I hope the Baby Jesus isn't crying anymore. :)

Keep your wits about you citizens, the road ahead is pretty bumpy.

But the other side (All Hail Marx (Groucho) and Lennon (John)) knows they can do it better than those silly Brits or Canucks. After all, they don't have Teh WON illuminating the path of all needs....only in America.

I do mention the plans for the Non Enemy Combatants at Gitmo:)

I am really looking forward to the book "Horse Soldiers"

Horse Soldiers is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered forty to one, they pursued the enemy across mountainous terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which was strategically essential if they were to defeat the Taliban.

So holding the prisoners has made us less safe and releasing them has made us less safe--could we just give them good citizenship medals and call it a day?

Posted by: Noel at March 23, 2009 11:02 PM

The Anointed One is bringing us closer to the end of history. And as we all know, the history of the world can be written in two words. "Jesus Wept".

And well he should with twerps like Obama in the saddle.

A.G. Holder is considering just such a move.

Well, at least the war on terror is over. . . except for some or most of the bombing, shooting, killing, IED'ing, and related havoc, and the somewhat constant threat of a terrorist attack in the United States, possibly employing some type of weapon of mass effect. . .

I feel better already.

The United States is conducting overseas contingency operations; the United States has always conducted overseas contingency operations. . .

Posted by: Bob W (the new Kowalsky) at March 24, 2009 10:08 PM

Yup, we *have* always conducted contingency operations.

For example, the incursion into Festung Europa on 6 June 1944 was a land-centric joint contingency operation conducted utilizing several Units of Employment in an AirLandBattlespace Named Area of Interest for the purpose of imposing a future-reducible containment policy on enemy combatants and getting inside the OODA loop of their C4I infrastructure.

Feel better now?

Ooh, Bill. When you use Army newspeak it makes my head hurt. Quick, give me a stick to beat Thomas Ricks with.

The plan for Mexican Drug Violence on the Mexican Border. This Plan is to use a defoliant but there has been an injunction stopping the use on a 1.1 mile test strip between Nueva Laredo and Laredo.

Obama's plans to secure the Mexican Border getting flack from the GREENS.

No more agent Orange. We now have agent Green. This substance is Miracle Grow under another name. It encourages growth that dies with the onset of summer. It then catches fire with the first lightning strike and incinerates everything around it for about 10 klicks.

Same result, just takes a little longer with more collateral damage.

>Duh. The idea that releasing more recidivist terrorists increases - in any way - the number of whack jobs out there who would like to see the United States go [poof!] is utterly absurd.

It's not even THAT simple, Cass. A lot of the reason why these guys were held the way they were was problems coming out of the conviction of Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman: In 2005, members of Rahman’s legal team, including attorney Lynne Stewart, were convicted of facilitating communication between the imprisoned Sheikh and members of the terrorist organization Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya in Egypt.

In short, even in custody, they were still defacto capable of some oversight of the operations they were performing when free. This, plus the fact that, by claiming to be their own attorneys they were getting access to key information about how they were caught, who was involved, and able to feed such information back to accomplices for those accomplices own protection and/or for retributive action against those who were involved in their capture is at the heart of the whole mess.

The terrorists and their accomplices were using our own techniques, designed to protect the innocent, against us. Much as they used our own air-transport system to provide them with "guided missles" for taking out the WTC and attack the Pentagon, they are/were using other aspects of our society against us.

This is at the heart of what they attempt to do -- abuse our own reason and decency as weapons to undermine our all-around defenses and strategic offense.

BillT has mastered the art of the new Newspeak. That event now sounds ever so lovely.

If the little darlings from Guantanamo are released, you can bet that (if they don't go promptly back to Syria) they'll enroll themselves on our welfare rolls for a long cushy life here, where they'll be free to go on speaking tours to mosques all over the country.

I suggest letting them all free in Murtha's district.
