Flinty Chicago Toughness Alert!

If this kind of thing didn't happen with disturbing regularity, the Editorial Staff would have to make it up.

Strange goings on surrounding the programme for the first day of Gordon Brown's visit to Washington.

No sooner had the Prime Minister's plane touched down at Andrews Air Force on Monday evening when word was passed to travelling Westminster correspondents that the press conference they'd been told to expect had been called off "because of snow".

Hours earlier, at around 4pm EST on Monday, a British official had told me that there would be a "press conference" after the PM and President Barack Obama had met in the Oval Office and before they had their working lunch in the Old Family Dining Room. Exact timings, however, were vague.

By 8pm, the press conference - if there'd ever been one planned - was officially off. The White House press schedule stated: "There will be a pool spray of the meeting." In layman's language, that means a small collection of reporters and perhaps two or three quick questions. That means something very short and ample opportunity to dodge anything difficult.

As Ben Brogan of the Mail puts it, this is "not the standing podium-to-podium with the Messiah image that Mr Brown imagined". Trying to spin as best they can, the British Embassy is describing it as a "press availability" while Downing Street officials are apparently saying that "we are still negotiating".

Good thing the administration is so obliging.

Algore baby, it's cold outside... Or as a meteorologists might observe, PM Brown's arrival resulted in the mercury dropping several inches.

Being the UK's head of state and being seen to be such a low pressure area when compared to I One!... well, it just has to be a low point in any politicians life.

But if it had to happen to anyone, PM Brown is more than suitable.

Washington, DC (AP): The unexpected winter storm forced the rainbow unicorns to remain in their stable today...

Heh. Wait 'til Brown finds out Obama isn't going to pay *his* mortgage, either...

Poor olde PM Brown... As he heads back across the pond without a Global New Deal II in hand, or even a $.5 Trillon Kippers-n-Chips & Universal Soccer Hooligan Health care bailout package, I want to dedicate this little tune in hopes that it helps him find some small consolation in his dashed Statis dreams.

P.S. PM don't let the deficit spending hit ya where the sun don't shine.

Well, I read in a UK-Telegraph article that President Obama was meeting with the Boy Scouts today in the Oval Office (among other things). So there is priorities here.

The comments (from Britain) after the Telegraph article are pretty harsh on poor old Gordon. Man, they are really down on that guy. Perhaps, as some hinted, Obama smells a loser and doesn't want to be seen with him. :)

Change we can believe in! Don't appear with political losers!

As they say in Knoxville, Tn: Heh.

Speaking of the Boy Scouts (and I often do, since I've been in Scouts for ~ 30 years as man and boy), the usual suspects are asking President Obama to NOT accept the office of Honorary President of the BSA. Now, the fact that this would then keep his signature off of Eagle Scout certificates would not be universally condemned by the BSA membership, but we'll see. My guess is that he'll sign up.
