Quelle Surprise!

You go to war with the allies you have, not the allies you wish you had:

With the White House’s reluctant embrace on Sunday of Hamid Karzai as the winner of Afghanistan’s suddenly moot presidential runoff, President Obama now faces a new complication: enabling a badly tarnished partner to regain enough legitimacy to help the United States find the way out of an eight-year-old war.

Looks like someone bet their entire paycheck on the wrong horse. Maybe continually announcing to the world that Hamid Karzai's election wasn't "legitimate" wasn't the smartest thing in the world.

Gee. It's not as though that was predictable.

This reminds me of how, during Australia's 2004 election campaign, the Kerry campaign went Down Under to proclaim that supporting our war in Iraq made them more likely to be targeted by terrorists.

Fortunately, the Aussies were smart enough to ignore him, and we didn't elect him either. Still, what brilliant diplomacy that would have been had he won the point: he'd have found himself a President who had talked his allies out of supporting him.

This may be even worse than that, but it's what comes to mind.

It appears that

1. the On-The-Job Training is *not* going well, and

2. he has *not* learned anything from his previous mistakes...

I think the most insidious thing here is the different perception in Southwest Asia, rather than the US.
To them, the election 'irregularities' are pretty much 'business as usual', and are looking at the criticism from the Obama Administration as something other than concerns about legitimacy. They (the natives) probably think that we want to displace Karzai for some nefarious reason, and are going to pick sides.
Nothing like knee-capping your allies in a war in which you have to win the 'hearts and minds' of the populace.
Pass the arugula.
Recharge. Reset. Whatever.

Experience shows. So (unfortunately for America right now) does a lack thereof... :-(
