We're Doomed

That's it.

No more rescuing those little buggers when they attempt to fry themselves on my walk:

Earthworms form herds and make "group decisions", scientists have discovered.

The earthworms use touch to communicate and influence each other's behaviour, according to research published in the journal Ethology.

By doing so the worms collectively decide to travel in the same direction as part of a single herd.

The striking behaviour, found in the earthworm Eisenia fetida, is the first time that any type of worm, or annelid, has been shown to form active herds.

"Our results modify the current view that earthworms are animals lacking in social behaviour," says Ms Lara Zirbes, a PhD student at the University of Liege in Gembloux in Belgium.

"We can consider the earthworm behaviour as equivalent the of a herd or swarm."

If they start tweeting, I'm out of here.

To the tune of "We Are The World":

There comes a time
When the rain begins to fall
And the worms come out of the ground.
There are people walking
Oh, it's time to watch your step
Or your feet will make a squishy sound.

We are the worms
Out on the sidewalk.
We are the ones who make a squishy mess
So watch where you walk.
It's a chance we're taking
Leaving out homes underground
Though it's true we'll get a better tan,
Just you and me.

When we're laying 'round
Keep your eye out on the street.
If you don't look out,
You'll have worms under your feet.
We realize
Oh, that the sun is gonna come
And we'll shrivel up like beef jerky from the heat.

We are the worms
Out on the pavement.
And when we hear a squish, we look around
To see where cousin Dave went.
It's a stance we're taking
'Cause worms are people too
And we sure don't want a better look
At your big shoe.

We are the worms
Out on the sidewalk.
We are the ones who make a squishy mess
So watch where you walk.
It's a chance we're taking
Leaving out homes underground
Though it's true we'll get a better tan,
Just you and me.

Oh, come on now, let me hear you.

We are the worms
Out on the pavement.
And when we hear a squish, we look around
To see where cousin Dave went.
It's a stance we're taking
'Cause worms are people too
And we sure don't want a better look
At your big shoe.

I save some of 'em from puddles occasionally.
(I'm such a bleeding heart sometimes...)

Nothing. I repeat nothing is as disgusting in this world as stepping on a worm, slug or snail barefoot.

Which is why, after rainstorms (think of the hippo ballerina from Fantasia), I am tiptoing all over the sidewalk.

Of course I wear shoes, but that is the pointe, is it not?

There is a joke in there somewhere about early birds and worms tweeting.

As long as the birds go after the worms and leave me alone, I am good.

Since I was a child, I've been driving my mom crazy with saving earthworms from the paved sidewalks :o) I had to find the straw or a small stick to carry it on, though, no touching this thingy with my bare hands, no, sir... I still do it when I see one :o)

I think it is cute the way my kids stuff things in their pocketses...I just don't like diving into their pocketses with my bare hands before doing laundry...no, gollum...

A bedtime rhyme that left me giggling as a child over 5 decades ago...

Ooey Gooey was a worm,
A mighty worm was he.
He sat upon a railroad track,
A train he did not see.

Oooooooeeeeey Goooooooeeeey!

"Earthworms form herds and make "group decisions", scientists have discovered. "

And to think they could have just watched, "Tremors" and had all that knowledge before them upon the silver screen.

Or Dune.

Or film clips of the 1968 Dem Convention protests.

So maybe I'm not the only one that picks up the snails that show up after the rains? (I'm in a coastal desert region - not many earthworms, just lots of snails.)

Ziobuck:

I taught my boys a slightly different version:

Ooey Gooey was a worm,
Ooey Gooey *loved* to squirm
One day, Ooey Gooey wriggled onto a train track.

Along came a train, and...
[big pause for suspense]
OOEY GOOEY!!!!

Another one my husband taught me:

I'm gonna bore a hole and I don't know where
I think I'll take a chance and bore it ...
Right...
THERE!

The accompanying hand motion:

You start about 3 feet away from the baby. Extend your index finger and circle it around, starting with really big circles and spiraling narrower and narrower as you get closer to the baby.

When you say "There!", you tickle them with the tip of your finger.

I have never seen a baby who didn't love this. Never :)

I once stepped on a slug while making my way down stairs and landed in a heap. That still hurts.
