"Artists" Gobsmacked by Human Nature

Today in Chronicles of the Intuitively Obvious, art curators at the tony National Gallery are shocked to find that the unwashed masses have a better feel for Art than they do:

It was supposed to be a tribute to a Renaissance master. But the National Gallery’s latest exhibition – which features women recreating nude scenes from Titian’s paintings – is attracting a type of visitor not normally found in the capital’s cultural landmark. Curators are disturbed at the plethora of ‘dirty old men’ who come to look through peepholes at the naked models, ignoring the masterpieces on the wall.

...Since the show opened last week, men have been sidling up to staff and asking for directions to ‘the peepshow thingy’.

One has visited five times in just seven days, while some older men have even complained to staff about the quality of the nudes – and the small size of the peepholes.

Apparently, the appreciation of Great Art requires gobs more education than is possessed by the average bear:

The Diana installation, part Metamorphosis: Titian 2012, was conceived by Turner Prize winner Mark Wallinger, whose previous work includes a video of himself dressed as a bear wandering aimlessly around a gallery.

Damned cultural Philistines.

For some reason I profoundly don't want to examine too closely, when I first read the bolded sentence, I saw this:

The Diana installation, part Metamorphosis: Titian 2012, was conceived by Turner Prize winner Mark Wallinger, whose previous work includes a video of himself dressed as a bare wandering aimlessly around a gallery.

Well, the head Philistine did set it up as a peep show, thereby thoroughly insulting the Master and his presentation. The "contemporary way" is a porn shop's back room?

This shows two of the three Diana paintings. Nothing peepy (!?) about them.

Sure, Mr. Hines. You spend all last year telling the OWS protesters to take their Master of Fine Arts degree and go get a job, and when they finally find one it's just complain, complain, complain. :)

OK, that wins Comment of the Day :p

Oh, I'm down with the Ladies of the Evening Peep Show doing...what they do.

It's the head Philistine, that nasty 1%-er, who's plainly not giving his Ladies their fair share, about whom I'm complaining. Only six of them, he could hire? What are we to do with the other half of the day?

"What are we to do with the other half of the day?"

I don't know....clean up?

Posted by: The Wizzerd of Izz at July 16, 2012 07:25 PM

If we have to clean them up, we'll need the whole day.

Posted by: Groucho Marx at July 16, 2012 07:30 PM

clean up?

Nah, that's what staff are for. I don't do clean up. I do mess. Just ask my wife.

You want us to ask your wife about your staff? We may need two days to clean it up around here.

You want us to ask your wife about your staff?

No, NO, NOOO! Those are NOT the pictures we are looking for!

Titian 2012 -- is the first "i" a long or short vowel sound?

Why, yes. Yes, it is.

I *so* wasn't going to touch that one...

It's been decades since I overheard my teenaged sons having great fun with the pronunciation of "Titleist" (short i, long e...)

*sigh*

I still roll my eyes every time I see their logo.

Was he Knut, the Adorable Gay Polar Bear?

Or just the bear on the Andy Williams show?
