Missing the Forest for the Horses and Bayonets

Over at Blackfive, Grim writes:

Aircraft carriers and boomer submarines are both good examples of just why a larger Navy is necessary. US power projection is indeed built around these ships, but both kinds of ships require significant support from other ships. If boomer subs lack cover from attack subs, they are in peril. If you send an aircraft carrier into danger without adequate destroyer cover you will lose it. This is why every carrier strike group includes not just the power-projecting carrier and guided missile cruisers, but destroyers and anti-aircraft warships.

That doesn't even touch the number of pure support vessels that are afloat to keep the warships tended. Nor does it treat other means of power projection built around Navy vessels, such as the Marine Corps' 'Gator Freighters.'

... It's one thing to say that you want a smaller, less capable American navy for some reason -- or that you are willing to accept a reduced American capacity to project power around the world. It's another thing to suggest that these ships are examples of why we don't need a large Navy. In fact, the model of power projection built around these ships is exactly why we need a large Navy. The ships are evidence for the opposite of the President's argument.

In other news, Obama's reflexive urge to deflect responsibility for his own decisions may backfire:

The Pentagon cuts were supposed to be more painful for defense hawks in the Republican Party and force them to agree to a deal that raises taxes by closing loopholes. Democrats have floated ending tax breaks for oil companies and imposing a minimum tax on millionaires as part of a sequester replacement deal.

The GOP aide said that this tactical mistake would cost Obama votes in Virginia, a swing-state with many military service members and defense industry workers.

“Ads are being run on the issue. Obama says it won't happen and his aides immediately say, ‘Wait a sec ...’ ” the aide said.

“It’s interesting that he’s taken the sequester off the table — even though he’s the one that put it there,” said a Senate aide.

Wielding all that Smart Power is hard.

I would love to see some evidence that it was actually true that sequestration wasn't going to happen. The President's word is... well... inadequate under the circumstances.

The endless blaring bombast of the Obama Left is getting very hard for me to listen to. It is like the old-timey trumpet fanfare announcing the glorious presence of the king, on an endless loop cycle. Perhaps I am just getting crankier in my old age, but I no longer have the patience to listen to bullshit yelled out at the top of some liberal's lungs.

Years ago, I just found PRAVDA-style bombast, delivered in all caps and exclamation points, to be ridiculous and amusing. Now, decades later, I just want them to stop annoying me.

THE GREAT LEADER HAS ISSUED NEW WISDOM FOR THE AGES! WE HAVE PLANES! THAT CAN LAND ON SHIPS! WE HAVE ALSO EXCEEDED THE PARTY'S LATEST 5-YEAR PLAN BY 500%! OUR ARMIES ARE VICTORIOUS ON ALL FRONTS! wORKERS AND PEASANTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND SPONTANEOUS DEMONSTRATIONS OF SUPPORT FOR THE GREAT LEADER NEXT TUESDAY! VOLUNTARY COMPLIANCE IS MANDATORY! THE ENTIRE WORLD WAITS IN BREATHLESS ANTICIPATION FOR LIBERATION FROM ITS CAPITALIST OPPRESSORS BY THE SELFLESS GUARDIANS OF THE RED ARMY!

Everytime I hear Obama, Biden, Hillary, Axelrod, the geeky press guy who can never give a straight answer, or the typical media apologists, I know what I am gonna get -- variations on the preceding paragraph.

I did not watch the debates, because subjecting myself to that much Obama would have driven me to drink. The lies, weasel words, obfuscations, etc are pointless to hear. The Left has no problem with lies or deceit, and never has. For them the end justifies any means necessary to bring about the Revolution. This is why Libya can be a riot, no a terrorist act, no a riot, no a terrorist act. Truth matters nothing to Obama's base, so long as the leftist ideology is advanced. His base cares nothing for broken campaign promises in 2008, nor any policies or agendas for the future. Obama will continue trying to move us to the Left, so anything he does will be supported. Romney will not advance the Revolution, so he is evil and must be destroyed at any cost.

When dealing with these sorts of people, any reasonable person is wasting his/her time. Its like trying to reason with a holocaust denier, or convincing a jihadi that he will not be rewarded by Allah with 72 virgins in paradise for blowing up a bus full of schoolchildren. Religious zealots (and I include the hard Left in that category) can be defeated, but are rarely persuaded by reason.

So, regular people and undecideds should be your target audience for reasonable argument and discourse, but speaking to, or listening to, die-hard liberals is a meaningless exercise. Therefore, Romney's refusal to to go mano-a-mano with Obama may have looked weak on the surface, but I think his calm moderation was more appealing to undecideds and moderates.

Comrade AFE:

It has come to our attention that your beet ration has not been adjusted for some time now.

Feh! Don't think you can cheer me up from the Obama cesspool so easily, Cass! My affections and happiness cannot be so easily purchased!

Oh, who am I kidding. Hand over the extra beet slice, cherie.:)

I was vastly amused when he said that we had boats that went underwater, and that we were no longer using bayonets, mules, or horses. Or that Romney w

I just *knew* he had been ensmartening his bad self by holding the PDB to his head and getting it by osmosis.

Despite Obama's aggressiveness in vigorously defending his packs of lies (I have to give credit where credit is due), he did not come off as a leader, or even very presidential. In every point regarding security risks, he outright lied.

The outcomes of his wishful thinking have been higher gas prices (thus keeping us dependent on foreign oil and subservient), higher taxes (thus keeping us dependent on borrowing from foreign creditors and subservient), eliminating the military (thus putting us in a vulnerable state), apologizing for our presence on the planet in order to keep the peace, and so forth.

Maybe you all don't see it that way.

The brightest point for me was when the moderator had a sleight of tongue and called Obama 'Obama bin Laden'.

Lastly, Obama is a fool if he thinks that the former Soviet Socialist Republic is no longer a threat.

I thought this was to force congress to make the necessary cuts a year or two ago, so as to not face these unacceptable cuts in the future. It was a great victory for balancing the budget. And it could not be undone. We couldn't do it, but it must and now it shall be done! No turning back!

And I believed. Not.

I haven't heard any mention of the history lately, just that its not going to happen.
Guess that committee was useless, as usual.

Ummm. sequestration is LAW. The Lord of the Lies signed it himself after insisting upon it in the first place. He can't just *undo* it -- legally. But then we all know that "legal" is another one of those *three letter words* for these crooks and lying liars who lie about lying.

Posted by: DL Sly at October 24, 2012 10:52 AM

I'm convinced he means that the sequestration is such a terrible threat that Republicans will give in to absolutely anything he demands in order to avert it. He's often quoted expressing this general view of negotiations, and expressing shock that Congressional Republicans don't cave in in the ways he expected them to, but he never learns.

"he never learns",
he never learns,
he never learns...

W.B. and I just returned from standing in a long line to vote.

I've never before seen a line for early voting out here in Flownoverville.

Maybe, just maybe, this is one lesson THE Ø not be able to ignore.

I got a question. Given 1) that Obama just went on national TV and basically declared that anyone who thinks the Navy needs more ships is a moron who doesn't understand the military and 2) the Navy is the one saying they need more ships, Didn't Obama just call his Navy commanders a bunch of incompetent morons on national TV?

How will his Navy commanders respond to this very public tongue lashing by the C-in-C?

May the results on November 7th allow the USN to lift their kilts and moon THE Ø.
